Autoclave Safety Tips Part 1: Using the Machine Leave a comment

Medical offices, dental offices, veterinary clinics, and tattoo shops around the world utilize autoclave sterilizers. These machines ensure that any reusable equipment is properly sterilized to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses. But because these machines use high pressure and temperatures to effectively sterilize equipment, they have to be used with caution. So in this two-part series, we’re going to discuss some important safety tips for using autoclaves. And if you just want to talk to someone, call our Free Tech Support at 704-966-1650 Option 3.

Regular tests: One of the most important things that should be done with discount autoclaves is regular testing. This ensures that the sterilization cycles are running properly and that the machine as a whole is in good condition. According to the CDC, a spore test should be conducted on every autoclave sterilizer at least once a week. There are also other tests, like those with biological indicators, that should be done after a certain number of hours the machine has been in use. Conducting regular tests will help determine if the autoclave is working properly so staff can rest assured their equipment is being sterilized.

Unload properly: After a cycle has finished, the equipment inside needs to be unloaded very carefully. If items aren’t unloaded with caution, the user risks being burned. The chamber temperature should drop and the pressure inside should return to zero before the door is open. As the door is being opened, it should be done so slowly to allow the steam to leave the chamber gradually. Once the door is open, the items should sit inside the autoclave for about 10 minutes to allow them to cool. And after the items are removed, they should be put somewhere safe and sturdy to finish cooling.

Schedule maintenance: If the functions of autoclave machines begin to show signs of malfunctioning, it’s important to schedule autoclave repair services sooner rather than later. As soon as discount autoclaves show signs of a problem, they should not be used until they have been fixed. Using a malfunctioning autoclave can be extremely dangerous. Furthermore, regular autoclave maintenance services should be scheduled as needed to maintain the quality of the machine.

Following these tips will ensure the safe use of an autoclave. In the next part of this series, we’ll discuss the importance of training and wearing proper clothing while using sterilizers.
