What’s Included in the Air Techniques AS50 Oil-Less Dual Headed Compressor PM Kit?

The air compressor is, arguably, the most used piece of equipment in a dental practice. It acts as the “lungs” of the entire working system of the practice. Dental air compressors channel sterile air through an array of tools throughout the working area. The water syringes, drill motors, even the hydraulics in the dental chair. The list of uses that a dental air compressor provides is long, which means that maintenance is all the more important to it.

In this article, we’d like to look at the maintenance kit for a specific dental compressor: the Air Techniques AS50 Oil-less Dual Headed Compressor. We’ll take a brief look at the compressor itself and some of its important information. As well as covering the contents of the PM kitto ensure you’ve got the parts you need for proper maintenance.

What is a Dental Air Compressor?

A dental compressor is the “lungs” of a dental practice. You might find a standard air compressor in a garage is designed to power pneumatic tools. A dental compressorhowever, is a specialized medical-grade device engineered to produce clean, dry, and pressurized air.

This air is the primary power source for almost everything a dentist uses during a procedure. From the high-speed handpieces and drills, to the air/water syringes, even powering some of the largest equipment. It powers the air-driven motors in the dental chair, assists in the operation of sterilization equipment, and powers other various pieces of equipment. They’re designed for power, efficiency, and even tasked with maintaining a proper working atmosphere with various noise reduction methods for patients and practitioners.

The most critical distinction for a dental compressor is that it is oil-less. In a standard compressor, oil is used to lubricate the pistons. Which can lead to trace amounts of oil vapor entering the air lines. Oil vapor in the air can interfere with the bonding of composites and resins to a patient’s teeth, causing fillings or crowns to fail. Second, and more importantly, the air is being exhausted directly into a patient’s mouth. An oil-less system ensures that no mechanical lubricants ever come into contact with the patient.

A Brief Look at the Air Techniques AS50 CompressorAir Techniques AS50 Oil-less Three Headed Compressor

The Air Techniques AS50 is engineered specifically to support the rigorous demands of a growing dental practice. As a dual-headed system, it is designed for 5-7 simultaneous users without a loss in performance or pressure. This model features a robust 2.5 horsepower output, delivering a substantial 7.5 cubic feet per minute. This increased volume ensures that multiple air-driven tools can operate across several operatories at once. All while maintaining its consistent 85 to 115 psi pressure range for precision clinical work.

The AS50 also sports a large storage capacity, as the AS50 utilizes a 20-gallon antimicrobial, powder-coated tank to provide a steady reservoir of compressed air. Despite its powerful output, the unit maintains a relatively compact footprint of 35.5″ x 33.5″ x 20.5″. An optional sound cover is available for offices looking to minimize noise, slightly upping its dimensions to 36.5″ x 33.5″ x 22.75″. The core of the machine relies on linear Teflon-bonded pistons and a long-stroke compression design, which facilitates a 100% oil-less operation.

To guarantee the highest level of patient safety, the AS50 integrates the same exclusive Membrane Dryer Technology found throughout the AirStar series. This system quadruple-filters the air from the moment it enters the compressor head until it leaves the tank, maintaining a humidity level of approximately 20%. This environment is critical because it prevents the condensation that leads to internal tank rust, and protects expensive instruments from moisture damage. When used with specialized Virus-Bacteria filters, the AS50 is independently verified to retain over 99.99995% of all particles. Creating a sterile air source that safeguards the practice against microorganisms and cross-contamination.
