How Did SciCan Impact the Sterilization Industry?

This is an updated version of our SciCan spotlight blog from January 2025, which you can read here.

SciCan is a name known around the world for many things. Their contribution to the sterilization industry is larger than you may know. Their history, beginning all the way back in 1957, shows that they’ve been changing the way we look at sterilization for some time. Whether it’s autoclaves, instrument washers, even wipes.

In this article, we’d like to look in depth at SciCan‘s timeline. From past to present, how they achieved their status as a household name. As well as a time when they proved to the industry why fast sterilization is necessary.

Where Did SciCan Begin?

Established in 1957, SciCan boasts over half a century of experience within the healthcare sector. SciCan‘s journey began with the distribution of premium German medical supplies by its founder, Arthur Zwingenberger. Zwingenberger took over the company in 1975. Under his leadership, the Canadian family-owned business transitioned from a distributor to a world-class manufacturer. achieving its most significant milestone in the late 1980s.

How Did STATIM Revolutionize the Industry?

SciCan‘s revolution was a great one, that started in 1989 when they forever changed the dental industry. The introduction of the first Statim Cassette Autoclave showed the world that fast autoclaves could be more than just an idea. For it’s time, the Statim autoclave was a technical marvel. Traditional sterilizers needed 45 minutes or more to complete a cycle, the Statim could do it in less than half that time.

The speed was impressive, but the industry didn’t understand its necessity until one case shifted the culture. In 1992, a high-profile news story from Florida told of a dentist who had transmitted HIV to several patients through infected instruments. There were many mysteries surrounding the incident, but one thing was for certain: something needed to be done. That’s where SciCan came in. The Statim autoclave wasn’t just for show, it provided peace of mind.

In a time when sterilization standards weren’t nearly as strict as they are now, the industry needed speed and reliability. Something to be able to sterilize important instruments in between patients… and the Statim was exactly what they needed.

How Did SciCan Go Beyond the Autoclave?

SciCan’s push to turn the industry on its head didn’t stop at steam sterilization. The sterilization cycle was much more than just the autoclave. They looked at the big picture, to go beyond the autoclave and tackle another facet of the sterilization cycle. This led to the development of the HYDRIM series of automated instrument washers. If an instrument isn’t thoroughly cleaned, then it can’t be properly sterilized. So they ventured out into instrument washers. Fast, efficient cleaning machines to provide consistency that’s up to standard. With the added benefits of saving people from potential sharps injuries. But they didn’t stop there.

Surface disinfection is just as important as sterilization. Because what’s the use of sterile tools when your environment is a bacterial breeding ground? One of their more underrated contribution is the OPTIM line of cleaners and disinfectants. Using Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide (AHP), SciCan created a surface disinfectant that was powerful enough to kill pathogens in one minute but safe enough to be used without harming the user. It became a eco-friendly favorite in the industry because it breaks down into simple water and oxygen, leaving no toxic residue behind.

They also introduced a handpiece cleaning system that they called the Statmatic. Which was a vertical standing machine that sterilizes the intricate inner workings of your dental handpieces. It offers a reliable, efficient, and fast solution for handpiece turnaround.

The Merger

The year 2018 marked a major structural evolution. In June of that year, the Swiss-based COLTENE Group announced it would acquire SciCan. The merger also included the French endodontic specialist Micro-Mega, futher expanding the umbrella of technological minds. This $195 million deal created one of the world’s ten largest dental equipment manufacturers. Today, as part of the COLTENE family, SciCan leads with their G4 Technology. This innovation allows autoclaves to connect to WiFi, automatically logging cycle data to the cloud and even emailing technicians if maintenance is needed. From a small distributor in 1957 to a digital-forward pillar of global dentistry, SciCan remains the gold standard for keeping patients safe.

Now that you’re more in tune with where they came from, let’s take a look at what they have to offer.

What Are SciCan’s Offerings?

SciCan has proved multiple times throughout it’s history that you can consistently evolve and improve. When sterilizers needed to be faster, they brought fast cycle times to the game. When manual scrubbing became inconsistent, they created automated washing. When surface disinfection was evolving, they threw their hat into the ring with a winning competitor. They’ve been a consistent thorn in the side of the harmful bacteria and pathogens that plague patients everyday.

They’ve come up with some of the most impressive sterilization technology the industry has seen. So let’s take a look at some of the specific products that gave them their reputation.

What Are Optim1 Wipes? This is a container of Optim1 Wipes.

Optim1 wipes are a standout choice for anyone looking to keep surfaces safe without relying on the harsh chemicals typically found in industrial cleaners. Their main superpower is speed; while many disinfectants need to sit wet on a surface for up to ten minutes to work, Optim1 gets the job done in just sixty seconds. This is thanks to a patented technology called Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide, which is tough on viruses and bacteria but incredibly gentle on people and the planet.

Because the active ingredient simply breaks down into water and oxygen, these wipes don’t leave behind a sticky or toxic residue. They also don’t carry any of the scary warning labels or “poison” symbols you often see on other cleaning canisters. They essentially offer a “one-step” solution that cleans away grime while it disinfects, making it easier than ever to maintain a professional level of safety even in a busy, everyday environment.

Here are some other benefits of Optim1 Wipes:

  • Removes organic debris while disinfecting, saving you time and money.
  • Fast, 1 minute broad spectrum contact time ensures compliance.
  • Optim1 wipes are in the lowest EPA toxicity category, category IV.
  • Their packaging doesn’t use GHS hazard pictograms, signal words or statements.
  • No VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
  • The active ingredient, Hydrogen Peroxide, breaks down into water and oxygen.
  • No active residues reduce environmental impact.
  • ½ as many wipes as the leading competitor are needed to keep your surface wet long enough to achieve disinfection.
  • Designed for material compatibility, that way they can disinfect your work station without damaging ant of it.

Final Thoughts

What Did We Learn?

Think of SciCan like the ultimate “superhero” company for doctors and dentists. We learned that they started way back in 1957 and eventually changed everything in 1989 by inventing a machine called the STATIM. Before that, cleaning medical tools took forever—almost an hour! SciCan made it happen in just a few minutes, which was a huge deal because it helped keep patients safe from scary germs. Since then, they haven’t stopped innovating. They built special “dishwashers” for medical tools called HYDRIM, cleaning wipes called Optim 1 that are super tough on germs but safe enough to turn into water and oxygen, and even smart machines that connect to WiFi to tell you exactly how they’re feeling.

Basically, SciCan taught the world that keeping things clean doesn’t have to be a slow, boring chore. By making machines that are faster, smarter, and easier to use, they’ve made sure that when you go to the dentist, the tools they use are perfectly safe and ready to go. They moved from just selling supplies to building high-tech robots and cleaners that “set the gold standard,” which is just a fancy way of saying they are the best in the business. So, whether it’s a giant hospital or a small local clinic, SciCan is the reason those doctors can focus on fixing teeth or helping patients instead of worrying about invisible bacteria.
