What is a Dental Air Compressor?
A dental compressor is the “lungs” of a dental practice. You might find a standard air compressor in a garage is designed to power pneumatic tools. A dental compressor, however, is a specialized medical-grade device engineered to produce clean, dry, and pressurized air.
This air is the primary power source for almost everything a dentist uses during a procedure. From the high-speed handpieces and drills, to the air/water syringes, even powering some of the largest equipment. Oil vapor in the air can interfere with the bonding of composites and resins to a patient’s teeth, causing fillings or crowns to fail. Second, and more importantly, the air is being exhausted directly into a patient’s mouth. An oil-less system ensures that no mechanical lubricants ever come into contact with the patient.
A Brief Look at the Air Techniques AS70 Compressor
The Air Techniques AS70 is a high-capacity, three-headed oil-less compressor designed to support large dental practices with 7 to 12 simultaneous users. Its “revolutionary” design focuses on delivering 100% oil-less, dry air through the use of an exclusive Membrane Dryer Technology. The air is also pumped through the system using a 4.5hp motor that operates between its default 85-115 psi settings.
This system quadruple-filters the air—first at the compressor head, twice at the dryer, and finally as it exits the tank. This ensures that the air is cleaner and drier than standard requirements. To further protect patients from contaminants, the AS70 features an antimicrobial powder coating inside the tank and utilizes specialized Virus-Bacteria filters that have been tested to retain over 99.99995% of particles, effectively shielding against microorganisms.
In terms of performance and reliability, the AS70 is built for durability with linear Teflon-bonded pistons and a long-stroke compression design. It stores compressed air at a remarkably low humidity level of approximately 20%, which eliminates damp conditions that could lead to hazardous bacterial growth. The unit provides a substantial 15.0 CFM at 80 psi and features a 30-gallon tank capacity, yet maintains a moderate footprint for space-saving installation. With a standard installation, the AS70 sits at a comfortable 47.75″ x 35″ x 21.75″. However, a sound cover is available to keep the environment quiet which brings the total dimensions to 51″ x 36″ x 29.5″.
