Mythbusting: Common Misconceptions About Tattoo Sterilization Debunked Leave a comment

These days, it seems like almost everyone you meet has a tattoo (or ten). While the popularity of getting inked is growing, there are still plenty of myths surrounding the process that cause confusion, specifically about the sterilization process. If an interested customer comes into your shop but is still holding on to all of these misconceptions, you’ll want to be ready to give them the real facts. Make sure that you’re able to disprove any myths in your shop by having the proper tattoo sterilization equipment ready. And if you just want to talk to someone, call our Free Tech Support at 704-966-1650 Option 3.

  1. Myth: Tattoos cause cancer.
This misconception likely came about because some red inks contain minerals like cobalt and aluminum, which consumers may assume will give them cancer. However, many inks are made organically now and tattoo artists are sure to avoid any ink chemicals that could harm their customers. The myth may also come from the assumption that the needles aren’t steril. As long as you use equipment like the Statim 5000 autoclave or Statim 2000 autoclave in your shop, customers will know that you take sterilization seriously.
  2. Myth: You can’t give blood if you have a tattoo.
This myth is also based on the assumption that the shop doing the tattoo doesn’t sterilize its needles. If a tattoo parlor uses proper sterilization equipment, then there is no risk of endangering someone else through blood donation. Despite these facts, some donation organizations may prohibit people from donating if they have a tattoo or have recently gotten a tattoo. Others like the American Red Cross will let a donor go forward with the donation if the shop is state regulated.
  3. Myth: You can contract diseases from getting a tattoo.
Once again, this is completely false as long as a person is tattooed at a licensed shop with the proper equipment. There’s long been a myth that you can get HIV from tattoo needles, but there have been no reported cases of HIV infection as a result from a tattoo in the United States. Tattoo parlors engage in several steps to sterilize equipment, starting with removing bacteria, viruses, and pathogens through basic washing. Afterwards, reusable equipment is sterilized with equipment like the Statim 5000 autoclave.

Tattoos are a valid and enjoyable form of personal expression. Incorrect facts about the process of tattooing only serve to put the industry in a bad light. Know the right facts to combat these myths and the stigma will soon disappear.
