Halyard FLUIDSHIELD Level 1 Yellow Procedure Masks meet the ASTM F2100-11 Level 1 Standards

The Halyard Level 1 Yellow Procedure Masks

One of the best leading names in face masks is back with a couple new products for us. The fight to stop the spread of COVID never stops, and it seems Halyard doesn’t either. Because Halyard has just launched a new line of masks that differ by level. They now have a Level 1 face mask, and a Level 3 face mask. Today we’d like to focus on their level 1 masks.

These masks are different than the masks we’ve talked about before, the Halyard duck-bill N95’s. However, these new masks are still part of their line of procedure masks. These masks get that title for being made to handle certain circumstances that can arise during different types of patient procedures. Like high-pressure liquids or fluids splashing onto the mask. And they’re equipped with Halyard’s FLUIDSHIELD layer technology.

And the levels are most important here. So we’ll break it down for you. And if you just want to talk to someone for any questions you may have, call our Free Tech Support at 704-966-1650 Option 3.

What Do The Levels Mean?

Well, you can look at this from a basic perspective. If the higher level means better, then the lower levels aren’t worth your time, right? Consider the following: if the lower levels aren’t nearly as good, why are they still selling them when the higher levels are just as widely available? That’s because the level system isn’t a deterrent, it’s a guide. Each level is suited for different purposes or places. The difference lies in the protection that you get from each one.

For one, make sure that the masks you’re looking at are graded. Because not all of them are, and that can mean that their quality isn’t as good as you think. You should always check that it’s a reputable manufacturer or check for an ASTM rating. The American Society For Testing and Materials does quality testing on surgical masks to make sure that they meet their standards. The products are tested in 5 different criteria:

  • Bacterial Filtration
  • Particulate Filtration
  • Fluid Resistance
  • Breathability
  • Flammability

Their ASTM Standards for each are as follows:

TESTLevel One MaskLevel Two MaskLevel Three Mask
ASTM F1862 (Fluid Resistance)80 mmHg120 mmHg160 mmHg
MIL-M-36954 C (Breathability)<4 mm H20<5 mm H20<5 mm H20
ASTM F2101: Bacteria Filtration Efficiency (BFE) (Filtration 3μm)≥ 95%≥ 98% ≥ 98%
ATSM F2299: Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE) (Filtration 1μm)≥ 95% @ 0.1 micron≥ 98% @ 0.1 micron≥ 98% @ 0.1 micron
16 CFR Part 1610 (Flammability)Class OneClass OneClass One

Each level of mask is meant for a different situation in the environment that you’re going to be using them. And a higher grade mask guarantees higher protection. For example:

  • Level One: Low barrier protection. Only for general use, not used for aerosols, spray or fluids.
  • Level Two: Moderate barrier protection. Use for low to moderate levels of aerosols, spray and/or fluids.
  • Level Three: Maximum barrier protection. Use for high risk of fluid, spray and/or fluids.
What You Get At Level 1

Level 1 masks are used for places that are known to not be as infectious as others, and cost less than higher levels. They provide easier breathing and are more suited for everyday needs. These masks are meant to be more publicly available than masks made for medical facilities. However, level 1 masks are not quite as protective as higher levels. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t consider them. And the Halyard masks are all built with their FLUIDSHIELD barrier. Which is a multi-layered filter system in the front of the mask that also protects against high-pressure fluids. So these are great for areas that might not be as high risk as others, with a ton of protection.

Halyard’s Specifics

Now that you know what makes a level 1 mask, we can get specific about how Halyard has improved upon it. These masks have exceeded the level 1 standard. We’ve already mentioned that level 1 masks have better breathability. Halyard’s Level 1 Masks are no exception. But for the rest, here’s how Halyard shapes up:

  • BFE: 99.9% (industry standard: ≥ 95%)
  • PFE (@ 0.1 micron) : 98.8% (industry standard: ≥ 95%)
  • Fluid Resistance (mmHg): 80 (industry standard: 80)
  • Flammability: Class 1 (standards met)

And we can’t forget to talk about comfort factors as well. Since we’re all in this post-pandemic world, masks are now a daily driver for most of us that keep us safe. But comfort plays a huge role in it all if you have to wear it everyday, especially at work. Thankfully, Halyard knows best. The breathability of the level 1 already sets the bar. But the masks are enhanced with Halyard’s SO SOFT fabric. This fabric is a unique bicomponent material that was rated softest and silkiest among leading masks tested. And to top it off, each mask is equipped with more comfortable ear loops.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, Halyard doesn’t just meet, the industry standard, it exceeds them. These Level 1 Procedure Masks are the perfect balance of cost and comfort with enough protection to make sure you’re safe and your mask is secure. Enough breathability so that you don’t feel like you’re struggling later throughout the day. And up to 99% filtration protection and industry standard fluid protection. All backed by a silky smooth fabric lining to ensure maximum comfort. These masks are quite disposable also. So should you feel the need to re-cover, just safely dispose of your old one and grab a fresh one.

Whether it’s protection in the office or a shield to get you to the store, Halyard’s Level 1 Procedure masks have you covered. And we’ve partnered with Halyard to ensure that whenever you need it, we can offer the best in name brand PPEs at an affordable price for everyone.
