Time and time again we constantly reiterate the importance of infection control and infection prevention. Whether it’s through showcasing sterilization tech, personal protection equipment, going over the news in the industry, you name it. All of it is to constantly remind everyone why these standards and practices exist. And trust us when we say, there are more than enough available resources to show that reminders are absolutely necessary.
But aside from just talking about it, another way to get the point across is to get involved. Use resources to educate those of every age, whether it’s teaching someone for the first time, or reminding someone of its importance… Knowing why infection prevention is necessary to everyday work in the industry is crucial. Which is why we’re giving a spotlight to one event in particular to get involved: International Infection Prevention Week.
In this article, we’re going to talk about Infection Prevention Week. Not only giving you a bit of insight to their history, but also going over this year’s theme and how it can benefit everyone.
What is Infection Prevention Week?
Infection Prevention Week is actually an event that’s been around for a few decades. Established in 1986 by President Ronald Raegan, the International Infection Prevention Week was created to focus attention on the importance of infection prevention. Both for saving lives and money in healthcare. The Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, or APIC, currently continues the annual event.
In the years since its creation, not only has it continued to highlight the significance of infection prevention in the industry… but the week of recognition has also since expanded beyond the United States. IIPW’s reach has taken it to be recognized in places around the world, including Australia, the United Kingdom, the Middle East and Southern Asia.
With each year’s theme focusing on different areas of infection prevention, the IIPW helps more patients benefit from safer healthcare practices… as well as reduce the threat of HAIs, or Healthcare Associated Infections.
What’s the Theme of IIPW 2026?
Each year for Infection Prevention Week was led by a theme to tie everything into a topic to highlight. For example, in 2017, the theme was “Antibiotic Resistance.” In 2018, it was “Protecting Patients Everywhere,” you get the idea. The theme for 2026 is one that looks at the past, the present, and the future of infection prevention. This year’s theme is “Generations of Infection Prevention,” with the motto being “Past. Present. Protected.”
Every day of the week, the APIC will be talking about various points in history that’re significant to the evolution of infection prevention. Monday starts with the past, and each day until Friday goes further ahead, looking at 5 distinct points in time.
Monday – The Start of Outbreak Control
To start off Infection Prevention Week, Monday opens starting out with information from the pre-1800s. To properly show the history of outbreak control, look to one of the biggest outbreaks in history: the Black Plague.
Modern infection prevention and control is built on centuries of learning from historical outbreaks. This day examines how early public health tools, quarantine protocols, and epidemiological tracking laid the groundwork for managing infectious diseases before the widespread understanding of germ theory. It also recognizes the vital role of nurses and early medical pioneers whose bedside observations established the bedrock of patient hygiene.

Tuesday – The Founding Moments of Modern Science and Hand Hygiene
Highlighting the crucial turning points of the 19th century, this day centers on the realization that basic hygiene and clean clinical environments dramatically reduce mortality rates. Pioneers like Florence Nightingale and Ignaz Semmelweis proved that simple measures like handwashing save lives, establishing clinical protocols that remain the single most effective barrier against infection transmission today.
Wednesday: – Vaccines, Antibiotics, and Antimicrobial Stewardship
The 20th century transformed once-fatal infections into manageable conditions through the development of vaccines and antibiotics. Vaccines provide the body with lasting immunological memory to recognize and fight pathogens safely, while achieving community-level protection. Concurrently, this day emphasizes the importance of responsible antibiotic stewardship to combat antimicrobial resistance and preserve the efficacy of essential treatments.
Thursday – The Environment of Care, PPE, and Safety Protocols
Infection prevention extends deeply into the physical spaces where care is delivered. This day’s theme focuses on how comprehensive facility design—including optimal air handling, water management systems, and rigorous surface cleaning—reduces HAIs. It also emphasizes standard precautions, proper personal protective equipment (PPE) sequencing, and safe injection practices to protect both patients and healthcare personnel from exposure.
Friday – 2027 and Beyond: The Future of Technology and AI Integration
To end off Infection Prevention Week, Friday spends its time looking ahead to the future. Friday’s subject is the focus on the next generation of infection prevention. For example, the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, automated environmental monitoring, and genome sequencing.
While these digital tools streamline surveillance and risk detection, the campaign reinforces a core message: innovative technology is a powerful partner, but fundamental habits like hand hygiene remain the indispensable foundation of safety. The tools we create are meant to reinforce the already existing structure of infection prevention, not outright replace them.
Final Thoughts
As APIC’s Infection Prevention Week demonstrates this year, modern patient safety is built on centuries of scientific progress and continuous learning. From yesterday’s historical outbreak protocols to tomorrow’s integration of advanced technology… Every era has added vital tools to our infection control toolkit.
However, even as cutting-edge technology shapes the future, basic daily habits like hand hygiene and proper PPE remain the ultimate foundation of care. International Infection Prevention Week serves as an essential reminder that keeping patients and staff safe requires ongoing commitment from all of us. By actively sharing resources and staying educated today, we help build a safer, healthier world for the generations ahead.
