Can you really Sterilize an N95 Mask for Reuse?
Yes, you read that headline correctly. It is pretty much impossible to get any N95 masks these days. But it is good to know that the ones we currently have can actually be sterilized for reuse rather than just being thrown away. Has it Really Been Tested?
Delft University of Technology performed a study on the ability to sterilize N95 masks. And then studied the masks resulting abilities to filter air particles after sterilization. Their test results and available data have shown that you can properly sterilize an N95 mask for reuse through the use of a steam sterilizer.
First, they took a group of used mouth masks and placed them in permeable laminate bags. Next, they ran them through a 121°C sterilization cycle. Finally, they performed a free-floating airborne particles test. After testing with particle sizes of 0.3, 0.5, and 5.0 µm the results were tabulated. And not only were the masks ready for reuse hygienically, but there were no harmful influences on the integrity or functionality of the masks either.
Will any Steam Sterilizer Work?
Not just any steam sterilizer will do the job. You need to use a closed-door drying sterilizer. Closed-door drying cycles will not allow exposure of outside bacteria which would invalidate the sterility. Open door drying will, of course, allow outside air in before sterilization is complete. Thankfully the Tuttnauer EZ9 Plus, EZ 11 Plus, Elara 11, and the 5075HSG have been validated based on the Delft Validation Study to be effective for sterilizing masks with no effect on the proper filtration of microbes.
