Tell us, how often have you heard the name SciCan in the medical industry? Quite a lot, right? Well it’s definitely not without merit. SciCan has had a history in the infection control industry that goes back as far as the late 80’s. And in the time since then, they’ve worked tirelessly to always improve on the formulas that got them their start in the first place. Their evolution in the industry over the course of these 30 years is what’s made them a household name in medical, dental ophthalmology, and even tattoo and piercing practices around the world.
So in this article, we’d like to put the spotlight on SciCan. Showing off some of their history, how they got their big break in the game, and showcase some of their finest pieces of machinery that they have to offer.
The History of SciCan
SciCan, or now, SciCan Coltene, have been one of the biggest names in sterilization for quite some time. But the question remains, how did they get here?
Established in 1957, SciCan boasts over half a century of experience within the healthcare sector. Originating from the distribution of premium German medical supplies, SciCan achieved a significant milestone in the late 1980s with the development and introduction of its first globally recognized infection control innovation.
They’ve been producing autoclaves since back in 1989, when they introduced the first Statim Cassette Autoclave. And they were good. Autoclaves around that time took about 45 minutes to sterilize, but Statim could do it in 6. Now back then the speed wasn’t necessarily a problem. That is until the incident that Statim said increased demand for faster autoclaves.
See, in 1992 a troubling story aired on the news. The story told of a dentist that managed to transmit the AIDS virus through an infected instrument to 5 people. And they say that because of this, dentists realized that sterilization of instruments between patients was paramount. So they needed something that can get that job done in the time between patients, so it had to be fast. And Scican / Coltene gave them somewhere to look. And since then, there was nowhere to go but up.
All of their rising achievements actually opened the path to expansion for SciCan. In 2018, SciCan announced in June of 2018 that it was to acquire Coltene, another company that has products throughout the industry. The plan was to bring Coltene under SciCan’s umbrella and utilize the best of both worlds and help foster an even brighter future for both under one roof. Then in late 2018, the acquisition went through, changing SciCan into SciCan/Coltene. This acquisition brought together two strong companies in the dental industry, expanding Coltene’s product portfolio and market reach.
